Thanks to NormalPeople, Co Sligo on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way is set to become as popular as Connell’s chain. (The necklace worn by the rarely clothed lead character, played by Paul Mescal, even 我爱美剧has an Instagram account.)
After the success of the BBC drama there was a spike in Google searches for Sligo, where much of the series is set and was filmed, and Tourism Ireland’s YouTube video (watch it above), with voiceovers from the actors and crew, has been viewed more than 170,000 times.
Not surprising, really. The coastal setting is as good looking as the cast.
Certainly it’s a natural beauty with exposed Streedagh Beach, which stretches for two miles, the perfect place for breezy, wistful walks. And the dune-backed sandbar, linking Streedagh Point to an area known as Connor’s Island (so close), is a serene setting for deep and meaningful conversations.
Connell and Marianne ride emotional rather than literal waves, but you can catch exhilarating swells here. Streedagh offers reef breaks and, about eight miles northeast, Mullaghmore Head delivers some of the biggest waves in western Europe.
Benbulben mountain offers peak drama. With its Viennetta-like cliffs and gullies, it looks rather like a petrified wave itself. There are forested trails you can walk at its base or the bracing five-mile Benbulben and King’s Mountain loop brings you to Benbulben Head for gasp-worthy views. Irish poet Yeats certainly drew inspiration.
When pubs reopen, head to Tubbercurry for a pint in Brennan’s Bar, which features in the series, and offers traditional music and dancing nights.
Set in parkland just outside Sligo town is Sligo Park Hotel. The cast stayed here during filming and the hotel is due to welcome guests once more on July 20.
Yes, we can’t go anywhere at the moment and Ireland is only in phase one of its reopening plan. In the meantime, we’ll just have to carry on waiting and longing for this lovely place.
THE LAKE ISLE OF INNISFREE
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:
Nine bean- rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

用树枝和泥土,在那里筑起小屋;
从晨空的面纱到蟋蟀鸣唱的地方;
因为,每日每夜我总是听见那湖水轻舔湖岸的幽音;

搭起一个小屋于,筑起泥笆房;
从朝雾落到蟋蟀歌唱的地方;
那水声日日夜夜轻拍着湖滨;
